About the Random Team Generator
Splitting a group into teams by hand always feels a bit unfair — and slow. Paste your list of names, say how many teams you want (or how many people per team), and this shuffles everyone and deals them out into balanced groups in an instant. It's made for PE classes and sports days, workshop breakout groups, game nights, hackathons, secret-santa draws, or any time you need fair, random teams without the arguments.
How it works
Your names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser's cryptographically secure random generator, then dealt round-robin into the teams — one to Team 1, one to Team 2, and so on. Round-robin dealing keeps the teams as even as possible: when the total doesn't divide evenly, the leftover people are spread one per team across the first few teams, so you never get one huge group and one tiny one. Hit Regenerate to reshuffle with the same names. It all runs in your browser.
Options
- Paste flexibly — one name per line, or comma-separated; blanks are ignored.
- By number of teams — split everyone into exactly that many teams.
- By people per team — set a target size and it makes enough teams to fit everyone, kept even.
- Regenerate to reshuffle, and Copy to grab the results as text.
Limitations
- Teams are random and unweighted — it doesn't balance by skill, age or any other attribute.
- With uneven totals, some teams get one extra member (distributed one-per-team), which is the fairest split possible.
- Results aren't saved between sessions; copy them if you need to keep them.
Privacy
The shuffle runs entirely in your browser. Your list of names is never uploaded or stored.
