About the Countdown Calculator
This counts down to any future moment — a birthday, holiday, wedding, exam, product launch, deadline, or the New Year — showing a live ticking total of days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining. Pick the target date and time and watch it update every second. If the date has already passed, it shows how long ago instead. It answers the everyday "how long until…" question — how long until a date, until an event, or until tomorrow.
Just need the total gap without a live tick, or want to count only business days? See the Date Difference Calculator or the Work Days Calculator.
How it works
It compares your target date and time with the current moment on your device and breaks the difference down into days, hours, minutes and seconds. A live timer refreshes once a second, so the countdown ticks in real time. The calculation is based on the exact millisecond gap between now and the target, then split into each unit.
Assumptions and behaviour
- The countdown uses your device's current clock and time zone.
- The target includes a time of day, so you can count down to a precise moment, not just a date.
- It ticks live every second while the page is open.
- Once the target passes, it switches to counting up ("…ago").
Limitations
- It relies on your device's clock. If your system time or time zone is wrong, the countdown will be off by the same amount.
- The target time is interpreted in your local time zone — for an event in another zone, convert the time first (see the Timezone Converter).
- The live tick only runs while the page is open; it doesn't send reminders or notifications.
- It doesn't account for a daylight-saving change between now and the target beyond what your device's clock applies.
Privacy
The countdown runs entirely in your browser. Your target date is never uploaded or stored.
