About the Tip Calculator
This works out how much to tip and what the total comes to, and splits it evenly across a group. It's the quick answer at a restaurant, café, bar, or for a taxi or delivery — no mental maths at the table. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, and say how many people are sharing; it shows the tip, the grand total, and what each person owes.
How it works
The maths is straightforward:
- Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
- Total = bill + tip
- Each pays = total ÷ number of people, and tip each = tip ÷ people.
Everything updates live as you change the bill, percentage or group size. Amounts are shown to two decimal places.
Assumptions and behaviour
- The tip is calculated on the bill amount as entered — it doesn't decide for you whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total; enter whichever base you intend to tip on.
- The split is an even division across everyone.
- Common tip levels are around 15–20% in the US for table service; norms vary widely by country and service type.
- Values are shown to two decimals (cents).
Limitations
- It splits evenly, so it can't handle an itemised or uneven split where people owe different amounts.
- It doesn't add or separate tax — if you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter that as the bill.
- Rounding to the cent means an even split may leave a cent's difference across the group; adjust one person's share if you need it to sum exactly.
- Tipping customs differ by country and venue; the tool does the maths but not the etiquette.
Privacy
