About the Barcode Generator

This creates standard 1D (linear) barcodes — the striped codes on retail products, shelf labels, packaging, inventory tags and asset stickers. Enter a value, pick a format, and download a clean barcode as a PNG or SVG. It's useful for small businesses labelling stock, warehouses tagging assets, event organisers making tickets, or anyone who needs a scannable code without buying label software.

How it works — the formats

The barcode is drawn in your browser with the JsBarcode library. You can choose:

  • Code128 — compact, encodes any ASCII text and numbers; the best general-purpose choice for internal labels.
  • EAN-13 / EAN-8 — the retail product codes used worldwide (13 and 8 digits).
  • UPC-A — the retail product code used mainly in North America (12 digits).
  • Code39 — an older format for letters and numbers, common in industry and ID cards.

You can show or hide the human-readable value under the bars, and export as a PNG (for quick use) or SVG (vector, scales cleanly for print).

Assumptions and behaviour

  • Each format has strict input rules, and the tool validates as you type — an invalid value shows an error rather than a broken barcode.
  • EAN-13 expects 12–13 digits (it can compute the check digit), EAN-8 7–8 digits, UPC-A 11–12 digits; Code128 and Code39 are more flexible about content.
  • The value is drawn as a proper barcode with a quiet-zone margin so scanners can read it.
  • Show/hide of the printed value is your choice.

Limitations

  • These are 1D barcodes, not QR codes. For a QR code (URLs, WiFi, contacts) use the QR Code Generator instead.
  • Retail formats have fixed lengths and check digits. EAN/UPC codes must be the right number of digits, and a real retail barcode also needs an officially assigned GS1 company prefix — this tool draws a valid-looking code, but it can't register a genuine retail product number for you.
  • Code39 is low-density and produces long barcodes for longer values; Code128 is more compact for general use.
  • It generates the barcode image; it doesn't manage a catalogue, print label sheets, or assign numbers.

Privacy

Barcodes are generated entirely in your browser. Your values are never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no watermark, no limits.

Which barcode formats are supported?

Code128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and Code39. Code128 is the best general-purpose choice; EAN/UPC are the retail product formats.

Can I download PNG and SVG?

Yes. PNG for quick use, SVG for vector output that scales cleanly for print and labels.

Why does it say my value is invalid?

Each format has strict rules — EAN-13 needs 12–13 digits, UPC-A 11–12, EAN-8 7–8. Code128 and Code39 are more flexible. The tool validates as you type.

Can I use this for a real retail product?

It draws a valid-looking EAN/UPC, but a genuine retail barcode needs an officially assigned GS1 company prefix. This tool can't register a real product number for you.

Does it make QR codes?

No — these are 1D linear barcodes. For QR codes use the QR Code Generator.

Are my values uploaded?

No. Everything is generated on your device; nothing is sent or stored.
