About Find and Replace

This swaps every occurrence of one piece of text for another across a whole block at once, with a live count of how many were changed. It's faster than your editor's dialog for a quick job: fixing a repeated typo or old product name throughout a document, reformatting a list, stripping or swapping characters in exported data, or making the same edit in text you've pasted from somewhere read-only. Case-sensitivity, whole-word matching and full regular-expression support cover both simple and advanced replacements.

How it works

Your search term is turned into a global regular expression and applied across the input:

  • Plain mode — special characters in your search are escaped automatically, so you can search for ., (, $ and the like literally.
  • Regex mode — your search is used as a JavaScript regular expression, so you can match patterns and use backreferences like $1 in the replacement.
  • Whole word wraps the search in word boundaries so cat won't match inside category.
  • Case-sensitive is a toggle; off by default, so Apple matches apple.

Every match is replaced and the tool reports how many changes it made. Invalid regular expressions are flagged rather than silently failing.

Assumptions and behaviour

  • Replacement is global — every match is replaced, not just the first.
  • In regex mode, the replacement string supports the usual $1, $2 capture-group references and $& for the whole match.
  • Matching is case-insensitive by default; switch on 'case-sensitive' to make case matter.
  • The count reflects the number of matches actually replaced.

Limitations

  • Whole-word boundaries are ASCII-oriented. JavaScript's \b treats letters, digits and underscore as word characters, so whole-word matching around accented or non-Latin words may not behave as expected.
  • Regex mode is powerful but unforgiving — a malformed pattern is rejected with an error, and a broad pattern can replace more than you intend, so check the count.
  • It operates on the text you paste in; it doesn't work across files or preserve any rich formatting.
  • There's no undo beyond re-editing — keep your original if the replacement is destructive.

Privacy

Find and replace runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this find and replace tool free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no limits, runs in your browser.

Does it support regular expressions?

Yes. Turn on regex mode to use JavaScript regular expressions, including capture groups and $1/$2 backreferences in the replacement.

Can I search for special characters literally?

Yes. In plain mode, regex special characters like . ( ) $ are escaped automatically, so they're matched as literal text.

How do I match whole words only?

Enable 'whole word', which wraps your search in word boundaries so 'cat' won't match inside 'category'. Note boundaries are ASCII-oriented.

Is the search case-sensitive?

By default no — Apple matches apple. Turn on 'case-sensitive' to make case matter.

Does it tell me how many replacements were made?

Yes, it shows a live count of how many matches were replaced.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
