About the Time Converter
This converts a duration between time units — seconds to minutes, hours to days, days to weeks, and so on. It's for the arithmetic of durations: working out how many hours are in a number of days, converting a timeout or video length between units, or expressing a period in different units. Note this is unit maths on a length of time, not a clock or time-zone tool.
How it works
Each unit is defined in seconds; your value converts to seconds and then to the target unit. The exact factors are:
- 1 minute = 60 s, 1 hour = 3600 s, 1 day = 86,400 s, 1 week = 604,800 s.
- 1 month = 30 days and 1 year = 365 days, used as fixed approximations for unit conversion.
So 2 days = 48 hours = 2880 minutes, and 1 week = 168 hours.
Assumptions and behaviour
- A day is exactly 24 hours (86,400 s) — this ignores the rare daylight-saving days that are 23 or 25 hours long, which don't apply to pure unit conversion.
- A month is treated as 30 days and a year as 365 days — fixed averages, since real months are 28–31 days and leap years have 366.
- Results show about 7 significant figures.
- The Swap button reverses the two units.
Limitations
- Months and years are approximations. Because calendar months vary and leap years exist, converting an exact number of months or years to days here won't match a specific calendar span. For the exact number of days between two real dates, use a Date Difference calculator instead.
- It's a duration converter, not a clock or time-zone tool — it won't convert a time of day or handle time zones.
- Displayed values are rounded, so hand-chaining rounded figures can drift slightly.
