About the Discount Calculator

This works out what you'll actually pay after a percentage discount, and how much you save. It's the quick check while shopping a sale, comparing offers, or pricing an item you're selling — no need to work out "25% off" in your head. Enter the original price and the discount percentage, and it shows the sale price and the saving instantly.

How it works

  • Saving = original price × discount% ÷ 100
  • Sale price = original price − saving

So a $80 item at 25% off saves $20 and costs $60. To reverse a known sale price back to the original, divide by (1 − discount ÷ 100) — for example a $60 price after 25% off was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 originally.

Assumptions and behaviour

  • The discount is a single percentage off the original price.
  • Results are shown to two decimal places.
  • It works in any currency — the numbers are the same whatever the symbol.
  • "Percent off" is taken from the original price, not from an already-reduced price.

Limitations

  • It applies one discount at a time. Stacked offers (an extra 10% off an already-reduced price) aren't the same as adding the percentages — apply them in sequence: 20% then 10% off is a 28% total discount, not 30%.
  • It doesn't add sales tax — the sale price is before tax; use the Sales Tax Calculator for the final checkout figure.
  • It handles percentage discounts, not fixed-amount coupons or buy-one-get-one deals.

Frequently asked questions

Is this discount calculator free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no limits, runs in your browser.

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percent and divide by 100 for the saving, then subtract it. $80 at 25% off saves $20, so you pay $60.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount÷100). A $60 price after 25% off was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 originally — not $60 + 25%.

How do stacked discounts work?

Apply them one after another, not by adding the percentages. 20% then an extra 10% off is a 28% total discount, because the second is taken from the already-reduced price.

Does it include sales tax?

No. The sale price is before tax. Use the Sales Tax Calculator to add tax for the final checkout amount.

Does the currency matter?

No. The calculation is the same in any currency — just read the result in yours.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
