About the Average / Mean Calculator
This finds the average of a list of numbers — and not just the mean, but the median, mode, range, sum and count too. Paste marks, prices, measurements, scores or any figures separated by spaces, commas or new lines, and it summarises them instantly. It's handy for schoolwork, quick data checks, budgeting, and anywhere you need the typical value of a set.
How it works — the measures
- Mean (average) — the sum of all values divided by how many there are.
- Median — the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle values if there's an even count).
- Mode — the value(s) that appear most often (none if every value is unique).
- Range — the largest value minus the smallest.
- Sum and count — the total and how many numbers you entered.
All of them update live as you type or paste.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Numbers can be separated by spaces, commas or new lines — paste from anywhere.
- Decimals and negatives are accepted; non-numeric text is ignored.
- The mode can be more than one value (or none, if nothing repeats).
- Results are rounded to six decimal places for display.
Limitations
- Mean vs median matters with outliers. A few extreme values pull the mean up or down while the median stays representative — for skewed data (like incomes), the median often describes the "typical" value better.
- It computes descriptive statistics for the numbers as entered; it doesn't do weighted averages (use a GPA or weighted tool for that) or standard deviation (see the Standard Deviation Calculator).
- Very large lists are handled in your browser's memory.
- It treats every value equally — there's no weighting or frequency input.
Privacy
