About the GPA Calculator
This calculates your Grade Point Average from the grades and credit hours of your courses, on the standard US 4.0 scale. Add a row per course, choose the letter grade and enter the credits, and it gives your weighted GPA. It's the tool students use to track a semester, check progress toward a target, or work out a cumulative average across courses of different sizes.
How it works
GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points, so bigger courses count more:
- Each letter grade maps to grade points — A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.0.
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points.
- GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours.
So an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 24 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus grade points (A+ and A both 4.0, as most schools cap at 4.0).
- GPA is weighted by credit hours, so a high grade in a large course moves the average more than one in a small course.
- Add or remove course rows as needed; only rows with credits above zero are counted.
- The result is shown to two decimal places.
Limitations
- GPA scales differ between institutions. Some use a weighted scale above 4.0 for honors/AP classes, some cap A+ higher, and some use percentages or a different points table. Check your school's official scale — this uses the common unweighted 4.0 scheme.
- It computes a straight credit-weighted GPA; it doesn't handle pass/fail courses, withdrawals, or repeated-course replacement policies, which vary by school.
- For a cumulative GPA, enter all courses across terms; it doesn't store previous semesters.
- It assumes the grade-to-point mapping shown; verify it matches yours.
Privacy
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your grades are never uploaded or stored.
