About Split PDF

This does the opposite of merging: it pulls pages out of a PDF. Two modes cover the common needs — extract a specific range into one smaller PDF (say, just the pages you need to send), or burst a document so every page becomes its own file. Handy for sharing a single chapter, separating a batch-scanned stack back into individual documents, or dropping the pages you don't need.

It all happens on your device, so the original — however sensitive — is never uploaded.

How it works

The PDF is loaded with pdf-lib in your browser and its page count is read. Then:

  • Extract a range — you type page numbers and ranges like 1-3, 5, 8-10. The tool parses them, ignores anything out of range, removes duplicates, and copies just those pages (in ascending order) into one new PDF.
  • Split every page — each page is copied into its own single-page PDF; the set is bundled into a ZIP for one download, with files named document-page-01.pdf, -02, and so on.

Pages are copied as real vector pages, so text and quality are preserved.

Assumptions and defaults

  • The range box defaults to 1-<last page> (the whole document).
  • Range parsing is forgiving: reversed ranges like 5-3 are read as 3-5, duplicates are removed, and page numbers outside the document are ignored. Pages come out in ascending order regardless of the order you typed them.
  • Extracted output is named document-pages.pdf; the split-every-page ZIP is document-split.zip.
  • Page numbering is 1-based (the first page is 1).

Limitations

  • Extraction preserves document order — it collects the pages you asked for in ascending order; it doesn't reorder pages to a custom sequence.
  • Encrypted or corrupted PDFs can't be opened and will show an error; remove protection first.
  • Like merging, document-level features (bookmarks/outlines, some form fields or scripts) may not carry into the split files, though page content and text are preserved.
  • Splitting a very large document into many single pages is memory- and time-bound by your device, since each page becomes its own file locally.

Privacy

Splitting is done in your browser with pdf-lib. Your PDF and the resulting files never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this split PDF tool free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no watermark, no limits.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It's processed locally with pdf-lib; nothing is sent to a server.

How do I choose which pages to extract?

Type page numbers and ranges separated by commas, e.g. 1-3, 5, 8-10. Out-of-range numbers are ignored and duplicates removed.

What does 'split every page' do?

It turns each page into its own single-page PDF and bundles them all into one ZIP download, named per page.

Can I reorder pages while extracting?

No. Extracted pages come out in ascending document order — this tool selects pages, it doesn't rearrange them.

What if I type the range backwards, like 5-3?

It's handled — a reversed range is read as 3-5. Duplicates and out-of-range numbers are also cleaned up automatically.

Does splitting change the pages themselves?

No. Pages are copied as real vector pages, so text stays selectable and quality is unchanged.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the encryption first — protected PDFs can't be opened by the tool.
