About the Reading Time Estimator
This tells you roughly how long a piece of text takes to read silently and to read aloud. Bloggers use it for the "5 min read" label on an article, speakers and presenters use the speaking-time figure to check a script fits a slot, teachers gauge assignment length, and content teams estimate how much material they're asking an audience to get through. Paste the text and both figures update instantly. Optimizing an article's keyword usage too? Check the Keyword Density Checker.
How it works
It counts the words in your text (splitting on whitespace) and divides by a words-per-minute rate:
- Reading time = word count ÷ your chosen reading speed, which you can adjust with the slider to match your audience.
- Speaking time = word count ÷ 130 words per minute, a typical comfortable speaking pace for reading aloud.
Results under a minute are shown in seconds; longer ones as minutes (and seconds where relevant).
Assumptions and defaults
- Silent reading speed is adjustable. Average adult reading of general text sits around 200–250 words per minute; slower for technical material, faster for skimming — the slider lets you pick.
- Speaking pace is fixed at 130 wpm, a common rate for clear narration or a measured presentation.
- A word is any run of non-whitespace, so a hyphenated term or a number counts as one word.
- Times are estimates rounded for display.
Limitations
- Reading speed varies enormously between people and text types, so the figure is a ballpark, not a precise measurement — dense, technical, or unfamiliar content reads slower than the default suggests.
- It counts words only; it doesn't account for images, tables, code blocks or equations, which change how long real content takes to absorb.
- The speaking estimate assumes steady narration and doesn't include pauses, emphasis, or audience interaction.
- Word counting is whitespace-based, so unusual formatting can nudge the count. Need just the word/character count itself? Try the Word & Character Counter.
