About the Sales Tax Calculator
This adds sales tax to a price or strips out the tax already baked into a total — for whatever rate you enter. It's a generic, enter-your-own-rate tool, so it works for US sales tax, VAT, GST or any percentage tax, in any currency. Use it to work out a final checkout price, to see how much of a receipt total was tax, or to price something before tax.
Taking a percentage off instead of adding tax? See the Discount Calculator. Working out a tip on a bill? See the Tip Calculator.
How it works
Add tax: the amount you enter is the net (pre-tax) price.
- Tax = net × rate ÷ 100, Total = net + tax.
Remove tax: the amount you enter already includes tax, and it works backwards.
- Net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), Tax = total − net.
So removing 8% tax from a $108 total gives a $100 net and $8 tax. Note that removing 8% is not the same as subtracting 8% of the total — you divide, because the tax was added to the smaller net figure.
Assumptions and behaviour
- One flat rate is applied to the whole amount.
- "Remove tax" correctly divides by (1 + rate), rather than subtracting the percentage from the total.
- It's currency- and jurisdiction-agnostic — enter the rate that applies to you.
- Amounts are shown to two decimal places.
Limitations
- You supply the rate. It doesn't know your local tax rate or which items are taxed, exempt or zero-rated — check the correct rate for your location and product.
- It applies a single rate; it can't combine multiple taxes (like a state plus city rate) in one step — add them together first, or apply in sequence.
- It's a maths tool, not tax advice or a filing tool.
- Rounding to the cent may differ by a cent from a retailer's own rounding rules.
- Pricing a product to hit a target margin after tax is a different calculation — see the Profit Margin Calculator.
