About the Image Converter
This switches an image between the three formats the web runs on — JPG, PNG and WebP — so you can get the format a site, app or workflow needs. Convert a PNG screenshot to a smaller JPG for email, turn a photo into modern WebP for a faster website, or produce a PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality. Each format has strengths, and this lets you move between them freely.
How it works — choosing a format
The image is decoded and re-encoded to your chosen format on a canvas in your browser:
- JPG — small files for photos; no transparency; lossy.
- PNG — lossless and supports transparency; larger files; best for graphics, screenshots and logos.
- WebP — modern format that's usually the smallest at a given quality and supports transparency; occasionally unsupported by very old software.
For the lossy formats (JPG, WebP) you can set the quality. The converted file downloads directly.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Quality is adjustable for JPG and WebP; PNG is always lossless.
- WebP and PNG keep transparency; JPG does not.
- Conversion keeps the original pixel dimensions — it changes the format, not the size.
- Re-encoding through the canvas strips EXIF metadata (including location).
Limitations
- Converting to JPG removes transparency. Transparent areas are filled with a solid background, since JPG can't store an alpha channel — use PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
- Lossy conversion loses a little quality. Going to JPG or WebP re-compresses the image; converting a JPG to PNG makes the file lossless from that point but can't recover detail already lost.
- WebP support, while now broad, may be missing in some very old apps or systems — use JPG/PNG there.
- It converts one image at a time and doesn't resize or crop; combine with the Resize tool if you need both.
Privacy
Conversion runs entirely in your browser with the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded or stored.
