About the 12/24-Hour Time Converter

This converts a time of day between the 12-hour clock (with AM/PM) and the 24-hour clock (often called military time). It's handy when a schedule, timetable, boarding pass or work roster is written in 24-hour time and you think in AM/PM — or the other way round. Pick a direction, enter the time, and get the converted value instantly.

How it works

12-hour → 24-hour: it takes the hour, minute and AM/PM and maps the hour onto 0–23 — AM hours stay as-is (except 12 AM, which becomes 00), and PM hours have 12 added (except 12 PM, which stays 12). 24-hour → 12-hour: it splits the hour into a 1–12 value with AM for 00–11 and PM for 12–23, so 14:30 becomes 2:30 PM and 00:15 becomes 12:15 AM.

Assumptions and behaviour

  • Midnight is 12:00 AM = 00:00; noon is 12:00 PM = 12:00 — the two cases people most often get wrong.
  • Hours in 12-hour mode run 1–12; minutes 0–59.
  • 24-hour output is zero-padded (09:05, not 9:5).
  • It converts as you type, and validates the input range.

Limitations

  • It converts a time of day, not a duration — for adding or subtracting hours, use a time-duration or time-unit tool.
  • It doesn't handle seconds or fractional minutes; it works to the minute.
  • It's format conversion only — no time zones are involved.
  • 24-hour times run 00:00–23:59; there's no 24:00 notation for midnight.

Privacy

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this time converter free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no limits, runs in your browser.

What is 2:30 PM in 24-hour time?

14:30. PM hours (except 12 PM) have 12 added, so 2 PM becomes 14.

What is midnight in 24-hour time?

00:00, which is 12:00 AM. Noon is 12:00, which is 12:00 PM — the two cases most people mix up.

What is 00:15 in 12-hour time?

12:15 AM. Hours 00–11 are AM (with 00 shown as 12 AM), and 12–23 are PM.

Is 'military time' the same as 24-hour time?

Effectively yes — military time is the 24-hour clock, though it's often written without a colon (1430 hours).

Does it handle seconds or time zones?

No. It works to the minute and involves no time zones — it's purely a 12-hour/24-hour format conversion.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
