About the Grade Calculator
This turns a raw score into a percentage and a letter grade — the quick check students and teachers reach for after a test, assignment or exam. Enter how many marks were scored and the total available, and it gives the percentage and the corresponding letter on a standard grading scale.
How it works
Percentage = marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100. The percentage is then mapped to a letter grade using a common US-style scale:
- A 90–100 (A+ ≥97, A 93–96, A− 90–92)
- B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69
- F below 60.
So 82 out of 100 is 82%, a B−. The letter updates as you change the marks.
Assumptions and behaviour
- The percentage is a simple proportion of marks scored to marks available.
- The letter grade uses a standard US ten-point scale with plus/minus bands.
- It works with any total, not just 100 — score out of 50, 75, 200, whatever the test is marked from.
- Decimals are accepted for part-marks.
Limitations
- Grading scales vary widely. Schools, universities and countries use different cut-offs (some pass at 50%, some use A–E, some use first/2:1/2:2). The letter here is one common scheme — check your institution's actual boundaries.
- It grades a single score; it doesn't weight multiple assessments or compute a course grade from components (a weighted average would).
- It doesn't round or curve marks; it reports the straight percentage.
- Some systems don't use plus/minus grades at all.
