About the Area Converter

This converts an area between metric and imperial units — the tool you need for land and property. Convert a plot from acres to hectares or square metres, a room or floor area between square metres and square feet, or a large parcel between square kilometres and square miles. Enter a value, choose the units, and it converts instantly.

How it works

Each unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the square metre; your value is converted to square metres and then to the target unit. Useful reference points:

  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (a square 100 m on each side).
  • 1 acre = 4046.8564 m² (about 0.405 hectares, or roughly 40% of a hectare).
  • 1 square foot = 0.092903 m², and 1 square yard = 9 square feet.

Note that area factors are the square of length factors — a square foot is 0.3048² m², not 0.3048 m².

Assumptions and behaviour

  • Uses the international acre (4046.8564224 m²); the tiny "US survey acre" difference isn't applied.
  • Acres and hectares are the common land-area units — 1 hectare ≈ 2.471 acres.
  • Results show about 7 significant figures.
  • The Swap button reverses the two units.

Limitations

  • It converts area only. Don't confuse it with length: converting the sides of a shape is a length conversion, while its surface is an area conversion.
  • It gives a numeric area conversion; it doesn't calculate the area of a shape from its dimensions (use a geometry/area calculator for that).
  • Displayed values are rounded, so hand-chaining rounded figures can drift slightly.

Privacy

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this area converter free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no limits, runs in your browser.

How many square metres in an acre?

One acre is 4046.86 m², which is about 0.405 hectares.

How many acres in a hectare?

One hectare (10,000 m²) is about 2.471 acres.

How do I convert square feet to square metres?

Multiply square feet by 0.092903. For example 500 sq ft ≈ 46.45 m².

Why isn't a square foot just 0.3048 of a square metre?

Because area factors are squared. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.092903 m².

Can it calculate the area of my room or plot?

No — it converts an area value between units. To work out an area from length × width, use a geometry or area calculator.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
