About the Number to Words Converter
This spells a number out in English words — turning 1,234 into "one thousand two hundred thirty-four." It's genuinely useful where a written-out amount is required: filling in a cheque, drafting a contract or legal document, completing a form, or teaching and learning how numbers are read. Type a number and the words appear instantly, with an option to capitalise each word. It's the tool to write out a number in words, working as a numerical-to-words converter whenever a form or cheque needs the amount spelled in full.
How it works
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right, each group is named (hundreds, tens and ones), and the appropriate scale word — thousand, million, billion, trillion — is added to each group. Tens and ones use a hyphen where needed (twenty-one, ninety-nine). A decimal part is read digit by digit after the word "point" (so 0.5 becomes "zero point five"), and negative numbers are prefixed with "negative."
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the short scale (billion = 1,000 million), standard in the US and modern UK usage.
- Written in the American style without "and" — "one hundred twenty-three," not "one hundred and twenty-three."
- Decimals are read digit by digit after "point," which suits reading out a value; it doesn't render cents as a fraction like "and 50/100."
- Commas in your input are ignored, so you can paste formatted numbers.
Limitations
- It's not a formatted cheque/currency writer. It spells the number; it won't add "dollars" and "cents" or the "and xx/100" cheque convention automatically — add the currency wording yourself.
- Whole-number size is capped at about 18 digits (into the quadrillions); beyond that, floating-point limits make exact spelling unreliable.
- It uses the short scale and omits "and"; if your context requires the British "and" or the long scale, you'll need to adjust.
- Decimals are spoken as individual digits, not as a fraction or a place value.
