About the Placeholder Image Generator
This creates blank placeholder images at exactly the size you specify — the grey boxes that stand in for real images while you build a layout, mock up a design, or wait on final assets. Developers and designers use them to fill image slots on a page, test how a grid or card reflows, or demonstrate a template. Each image is labelled with its dimensions by default, so you can see at a glance what size each slot is.
How it works
You set the width and height (up to 5000px each), pick a background — a solid colour or a two-colour gradient — and a text colour. It draws a rectangle at those dimensions on a canvas and centres a label on it; by default the label shows the size (like 800 × 600), but you can type your own text. The font auto-scales to the image. Download the result as a PNG. It all runs in your browser, so you don't need an internet placeholder service.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Dimensions up to 5000 × 5000px are supported.
- The label defaults to the dimensions but can be any custom text.
- Background can be a solid colour or a linear gradient between two colours; text colour is separate.
- The label font size scales with the image so it stays readable at any size.
Limitations
- Maximum size is 5000px per side; for anything larger you'd need a different approach.
- It generates a static image file; unlike a placeholder URL service (e.g. an image served from a link), it doesn't produce a live URL you can point an
<img>at — you download and use the file. - Backgrounds are solid or simple two-colour gradients; there are no patterns, grids, noise or sample photos.
- Output is PNG only.
Privacy
Placeholder images are generated entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
