About the Volume Converter
This converts a volume or liquid capacity between metric and imperial units — for fuel and containers in litres and gallons, drinks and recipes in millilitres, cups and fluid ounces, or engineering volumes in cubic metres and cubic feet. Pick the units and enter a value for an instant result.
How it works
Each unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the litre, so your value goes to litres and then to the target unit. Key definitions:
- 1 litre = 1000 ml = 1000 cm³; 1 cubic metre = 1000 litres.
- 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L = 4 US quarts = 8 US pints = 16 US cups.
- 1 Imperial (UK) gallon = 4.54609 L — noticeably larger than the US gallon.
Because the US and Imperial systems differ, this tool lists them separately so you always pick the right one.
Assumptions and behaviour
- US and Imperial units are separate. The US gallon (3.785 L) and Imperial gallon (4.546 L) are about 20% apart, and US pints/quarts/fluid ounces differ from their UK counterparts too.
- The cup, pint, quart and gallon here are the US customary versions unless labelled Imperial.
- Results show about 7 significant figures.
- The Swap button reverses the units.
Limitations
- Watch the US vs Imperial gallon. They're different sizes, so 40 mpg on a US gallon is not the same as on a UK gallon — always match the system to your source.
- It converts liquid/volume units, not weight — it can't turn litres or cups into grams without the substance's density (use the Cooking Converter's guidance for that).
- Dry US measures (like a dry pint) differ slightly from the liquid measures used here.
- Displayed values are rounded, so hand-chaining rounded figures can drift slightly.
