About the Statutory Maternity Pay Calculator
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks of your 52-week maternity leave, in two stages at different rates. This calculator applies the 2026/27 rates to your average weekly earnings (AWE) to estimate what you'll receive each stage, and in total.
How it works
- Weeks 1-6: paid at 90% of your average weekly earnings, with no upper cap.
- Weeks 7-39: paid at the lower of £194.32/week or 90% of your AWE (so most people on this stage receive the flat £194.32 rate, unless their AWE is low).
- Weeks 40-52: unpaid, unless your employer offers occupational maternity pay on top of the statutory minimum.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the 2026/27 SMP flat rate of £194.32/week for weeks 7-39.
- Assumes you're eligible for SMP (continuous employment with your employer for at least 26 weeks by the qualifying week, and average earnings at or above the Lower Earnings Limit) — this calculator doesn't check eligibility.
- Your average weekly earnings should be calculated over the 8 weeks (if paid weekly) or 2 months (if paid monthly) before the qualifying week, per HMRC's rules.
Limitations
- Doesn't check eligibility criteria — confirm you qualify with your employer or GOV.UK before relying on this.
- Doesn't calculate Maternity Allowance (a different benefit for those who don't qualify for SMP, e.g. the self-employed).
- Estimates only — not financial advice.
Privacy
