About the Student Loan Repayment Calculator
UK student loans are repaid automatically through the tax system once your income crosses your plan's threshold — but with five different plan types (Plan 1, 2, 4, 5 and Postgraduate) each carrying a different threshold and rate, it's easy to lose track of what actually comes out of your pay. This calculator applies your plan's 2026/27 threshold and repayment rate to your annual salary.
How it works
Repayments are 9% of income above your plan's threshold (6% for Postgraduate loans), deducted automatically via PAYE if you're employed. The formula is:
Annual repayment = (Salary − Threshold) × Rate (£0 if salary is below the threshold)
Divide by 12 for a monthly estimate.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the 2026/27 tax year thresholds: Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000, Postgraduate £21,000.
- Assumes salary is your only income relevant to the threshold and that repayments are collected evenly across the year via PAYE.
- If you hold both a Plan 2/4/5 loan and a Postgraduate loan, both are deducted separately — this calculator estimates one plan at a time.
Limitations
- Doesn't calculate interest accrual or total loan balance over time — only your repayment amount from your current salary.
- Self-employed repayment (via Self Assessment) can differ slightly in timing from PAYE, though the annual amount is the same.
- Estimates only — not financial advice. Confirm with the Student Loans Company or HMRC.
