About the TFSA Contribution Room Calculator
Your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) room accumulates every year you're 18+ and a Canadian resident, starting from 2009 (or the year you turned 18, if later) — whether or not you actually open an account. Unused room carries forward indefinitely. This calculator adds up every year's dollar limit since your eligibility began and subtracts what you've already contributed.
How it works
- Your cumulative room = the sum of each year's TFSA dollar limit, from the later of 2009 or the year you turned 18, through 2026.
- Remaining room = cumulative room − total contributions made to date.
Someone eligible since 2009 has accumulated $109,000 in total room by 2026 (assuming no contributions yet).
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the official annual TFSA dollar limits for every year since 2009 ($5,000 for 2009-2012, $5,500 for 2013-2014, $10,000 for 2015, $5,500 for 2016-2018, $6,000 for 2019-2022, $6,500 for 2023, $7,000 for 2024-2026).
- Assumes continuous Canadian residency since your eligibility year — room doesn't accumulate during years you weren't a resident.
- Doesn't add back withdrawals — if you've withdrawn TFSA funds, that amount is re-added to your room starting the following calendar year, which this simplified calculator doesn't track.
Limitations
- Doesn't account for withdrawal re-contribution room.
- Doesn't verify your actual CRA-recorded room — always check your CRA My Account for the authoritative figure before contributing.
- Estimates only — not financial advice.
