About the RRSP Contribution Room Calculator
Your RRSP contribution room for a given year is 18% of your previous year's earned income, up to an annual dollar cap ($33,810 for 2026), plus any unused room carried forward from previous years. Unlike the TFSA, RRSP room isn't tracked automatically here — you need your prior Notice of Assessment for the exact carry-forward figure.
How it works
New room this year = min(18% × prior year earned income, annual dollar limit)
Total available room = new room this year + unused carry-forward room
Earned income generally includes employment income and net self-employment income, minus certain deductions — it's not the same as total income.
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the 2026 RRSP annual dollar limit of $33,810, based on 18% of your 2025 earned income.
- Assumes any pension adjustment (from an employer pension or DPSP) is already reflected in the carry-forward figure you enter, since this calculator doesn't calculate pension adjustments itself.
- Unused RRSP room carries forward indefinitely until used, unlike the annual-only structure of some other accounts.
Limitations
- Doesn't calculate a pension adjustment (PA) or pension adjustment reversal (PAR) — get your exact room from your CRA Notice of Assessment.
- Doesn't account for a spousal RRSP split.
- Estimates only — not financial advice.
