About the IOF Calculator
IOF (Imposto sobre Operações Financeiras) is Brazil's tax on financial transactions — including foreign currency purchases, international card spending, and loans. The rate depends entirely on the type of transaction. This calculator covers two common cases: international card/forex spending, and a personal loan.
How it works
International card / forex spending: IOF = amount × 3.5% — applies to international credit/debit card purchases, prepaid travel cards, cash currency purchases and travel cheques for personal use.
Personal loan (individual): IOF = principal × (0.38% + 0.0082% × number of days, capped at 365 days) — a fixed portion plus a daily accrual, capped at a maximum additional 3% (so a maximum total of 3.38% for loans held 365+ days).
Assumptions and behaviour
- Uses the 3.5% unified rate for international card/forex operations by individuals, in effect since the rate unification following STF's 2025 ruling.
- Uses the standard 0.38% fixed + 0.0082%/day formula for personal (pessoa física) loans, capped at 365 days.
Limitations
- Doesn't cover corporate (pessoa jurídica) loan rates, which differ from personal loan rates.
- IOF rates are set by government decree and can change with little notice — always verify the current rate before relying on this for a large transaction.
- Estimates only — not tax or financial advice.
